Walking for Water

March 29, 2004--We are a group of 16 enthusiastic teenagers from Loudoun County in Virginia with a vision to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate in the world. Currently we are working in collaboration with a non profit organization called Wisdom Springs, Inc. to build wells in a landlocked West African country named Burkina Faso. We learned about this country when Sobonfu Somé, a spoke-woman from Burkina Faso, lectured at the Heritage High School.
Most of us were stunned to hear how the people in this drought stricken country walk 5 to 10 hours a day and carry 30 to 60 gallons of water which is used to feed the animals, drink, cook, and bathe with. We were even more sad to know that the water they find often is dirty and full of disease.
This how the idea of a "Walking for Water" got started by Kristen, a sophomore at Heritage High School, to find away to bring water to Sobonfu and her people. Kristen now has a team to support her in her vision. Our goal is to fundraise for 10 wells.
Walking For Water will be held at Morven Park in Virginia on May 8th, 2004. People will gather to walk 3 to 6 miles to help raise funds for the people of Burkina Faso. Each well costs $9,000 and helps more than 150 people. We will also be accepting cash and in kind donations as well as sponsorships. Any donation to this project is welcomed.
We are looking for help and support through media and donations so we can get wells for Burkina Faso.
